The second installment in the delicious Corinna Chapman series by best-selling cozy crime writer Kerry Greenwood.
Corinna Chapman likes the quiet life good food, good company, and her daily work as a baker. She doesn't really want mystery and intrigue in her life. Unfortunately for her, she doesn't have much choice. Corinna's apartment building seems to be a magnet for mystery and mayhem and, with her new lover, Daniel, a private investigator, Corinna seems destined to be involved in solving these mysteries.
This second book in the series sees a prankster spiking the chocolates at the nearby Heavenly Pleasures chocolate store (is it an elaborate and horrible joke, or a warning of worse to come?), an attempt to blow up the apartment block, and strange new residents moving in.
Heavenly Pleasures A Corinna Chapman Mystery Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Kerry Greenwood Louise Siverson Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd Books
I have read the first three books. They are about Corinna Chapman, a baker, and her bakery, Earthly Delights. Earthly Delights is in a building named Insula, with four shops on the ground floor, (each with an adjoining residence above it). Then floors two through eight each have two apartments per floor, all top with a roof garden. This provides us with many secondary characters to provide extra story lines to weave throughout each books main plot. The stories are mysteries of murder and misdeeds. They are also about the mysteries of life and people. The mysteries are full of turns and satisfy. In book two we have someone sabotaging fine chocolates a sin in any language, a Romeo and Juliet situation and a new mysterious neighbor.
To say "I want to live there", is not uncommon when you're in the middle of a book. But I want to live there even when the book is finished too. I want to take up one of the empty flats and make friends with these people.
Kerry Greenwood wrote/writes the Phryne Fisher Mysteries, which I have seen on TV, and have purchased in both DVD and book form but I haven't yet read the books. I will as soon as I can put down this series. I wonder if I will find that I want to read them out loud as I do these. It is a rare modern author whose flow of words begs you to read it out loud, even when you are alone in the room. Her words feel satiny like melting chocolate in my mouth, like poetry.

Heavenly Pleasures is the name of a Chocolate Shop run by a pair of sisters of Belgium extraction. They are located near Corinna Chapman's bakery and do very good business. Then Corinna finds out that they have been the focus of a series of unpleasant incidents involving their chocolates. Nothing dangerous, so far, so it is unlikely that they would be of interest to the police, and if the story becomes public knowledge then it might ruin their trade. They hire Corinna's partner (ex-Israeli soldier, current private eye) to try to find out who is trying to put then out of business.
This isn't the only mystery though around Insula, the Roman style building where Corinna has her bakery and apartment.
Corinna is intensely likeable with her whole-hearted enjoyment of the good things in life including bread, sex, chocolate and good company. The mystery is interesting enough; however, I really enjoy the cast of eccentrics who populate Corinna's world.
The narrator, Louise Siverson does an absolutely bang up job of reading this book. I couldn't imagine another voice as that of Corinna now.
I try not to read too many books in the same series in a row because I start to notice the authors little tics and twits. However, I got the first one (Earthly Delights) on a deal from /Audible and then had to buy the next two because I liked it so well. The following book (3rd) is Devil's Food.
I love these books about Corinna Chapman, a baker in modern-day Melbourne, Australia. Although written by the same author who writes the Ms. Fisher mysteries, Corinna is very different than Phryne Fisher. She's not drop-dead gorgeous, incredibly smart, sophisticated, nor able to do all things well. Corinna is down-to-earth, very people smart, a little overweight, and a wonderful baker. Plus, she lives in a building with fascinating characters and above a bunch of businesses run by those characters. The whole scenario is utterly fascinating. The stories don't involve a lot of murder and mayhem, but are captivating none-the-less. And then there are the cats, Horatio and the Mouse Police (Heckle and Jeckle), and her mysterious boyfriend about whom we learn a little more in each book. Real, plausible issues are dealt with -- drug addiction, homelessness, financial wheeling/dealing and coercion. But, this doesn't mean the books are dark -- they aren't. They are not depressing but rather hopeful and uplifting in many aspects. When you finish one, you are left with the feeling that you have been living in the building with Corinna and her friends, and that, yes, there have been ups and downs, but in the end all has returned to the routine of everyday living -- baking bread, making muffins, helping one's neighbors...... Might sound boring, but it isn't at all! Ms. Greenwood is a very talented writer!
As I finished the first Corrina Chapman book, I thought...gotta know what happens next. Delighted to have found Kerry Greenwood after she had written a number of these delightful books. This is the perfect summer read, the ideal way to slow down, catch your breath and escape for a bit. You come to love all of the full-bodied characters (pun only partilly intended), worry about them when you need to put the book down. Ms. Greenwood doesn't insult your inteligence by dumbing down her writing. She takes you to Australia and lets you see how real people live, or at least how you would hope they do. You find yourself wanting to sit down with a cup of coffee with Corrina, to offer to make a giant dinner for the building. If you are looking for Ayn Rand, this book isn't for you. But if you are looking for a warm, funny, sometimes intriguing book that will give you a glimpse of friendships savored, muffins delicious (recipes included) and just enough romance added to make it good but not too spicy, this book (the series!) is for you. Keep writing about Corrina, Kerry Greenwood, you do it to perfection.
